Helium Generation – Tustin Blimp Base?

Helium Generation – Tustin Blimp Base?

I’m watching a Huell Howser TV episode about the blimp station in Tustin.
One of the historic buildings is a smaller square building with a smoke stack. It was the helium generation facility for the blimps.
How was helium generated? Are there helium mines?

Now and Then Comes a Thought says:

It is removed from natural gas wells. Air Products is a major producer of helium: http://www.airproducts.com/helium/defaul…
Towards the bottom of the page in this link (http://www.dae.gov.in/ni/nisep04/page%20… it discusses extraction and provides a schematic of the process.

Numbat says:

Helium is cryogenically distilled out of natural gas to produce helium gas.
Helium is an inert gas and does not easily combine with other elements. There are no known compounds that contain helium, although attempts are being made to produce helium diflouride (HeF2).
